Braniff Airways Flight Attendant Jacket Wing 5th Issue

Dallas, TX 1928-1992

In 1928 Thomas E. Braniff financed an aviation company named Paul R. Braniff, Inc. with his brother Paul Revere Braniff. Eventually the airline was purchased by the Aviation Corporation (AVCO) holding company, whose other holdings included the predecessors of American Airlines. The Braniff brothers started a new airline in 1930 as Braniff Airways, Inc. The name was changed to Braniff International Airways in 1952. During the 1950s the airline expanded nationwide. The acquisition of Mid-Continent Airlines in 1952 allowed Braniff to add several more domestic cities. In 1965–1967 Braniff purchased Pan American-Grace Airways (PANAGRA). Up to 1978, Braniff remained one of the fastest-growing and most-profitable airlines in the United States. Deregulation of the airline industry was introduced in 1978, and Braniff misjudged this change. On May 12, 1982, Braniff Airways ceased all operations, thus ending 54 years of service in the American airline industry. Braniff reorganized with help from the Hyatt Corporation and acquired Floirda Express. This operation (Braniff II) failed because of funding deals and Braniff again entered bankruptycy on September 28, 1989 with scheduled flight ended in November. The Braniff name sufaced again when it agreed to acquire the certificate of bankrupt Emerald Arlines and launch a new airline. Braniff and Emerald were merged on June 15, 1991 and Braniff International Airlines (Braniff III) started flying. This version of Braniff filed for bankrupty on Agust 7, 1991. Braniff ceased operations on July 2, 1992.
