World Airways was founded in 1948. Edward Daly bought the airline in 1950. World got its first government contract in 1951 and has had a substantial amount of government business since then. The airline has bought and sold DC-6s and Lockheed Constellations, B-707, B-727, DC-8, B-747, DC-10 and the MD-11. They have had headquarters in Oakland, CA and Herndon, VA. World became a key military contractor during the Vietnam War and the Persian Gulf Wars. In 1987 they acquired Key Airlines which they sold in 1992. World experienced heavy losses in the 1980s as a result of an attempt at scheduled service. World Airways does not currently have any scheduled passenger service. Instead, it provides airlift for customers who need long haul widebody aircraft for passenger and cargo service. In 2006, World Airways and North American Airlines became subsidiaries of World Air Holdings, Inc. Later they would be acquired under the New ATA Holdings, Inc. now known as GlobalAero Logistics. All three certificated airlines autonomous operations, namely ATA Airlines, North American Airlines and World Airways are operated by GlobalAero Logistics. In 2007 GAL moved its operation to the World Airways building in Peachtree City, Georgia. In November, 2013 World and GlobalAero filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and on March 27, 2014, the airline flew its last flight and shut down due to lack of funding. North American Airlines shut down on June 9, 2014.
